CNN Finds Bigs Gains for ObamaCare, But With Skewed Sample

Today CNN/Opinion Research released a poll showing big gains for President Barack Obama’s health care proposal after his address to Congress last night. According to the poll, 56% of respondents reacted very positively to the speech and 21% reacted somewhat positively. After the speech, 67% of respondents support President Obama’s plan and 29% oppose it. By comparison, in the days leading up to the speech 53% supported the President’s plan and 36% opposed it.

However, these results must be taken with a grain of salt. The poll’s sample consisted of 18% Republicans, 45% Democrats, and 37% Independents. No recent survey by any credible source has found a greater than 2 to 1 advantage in party identification for Democrats. This makes the poll’s results highly suspect.

UPDATE: CNN is now admitting that “the number of Democrats in the voting age population as a whole indicates that the sample is about 8-10 points more Democratic than the population as a whole.”
