In addition, Rasmussen’s Poll shows that the bump President Obama’s health care proposal received after last week’s speech to Congress is dissipating:

Support for the President’s health care proposal has been increasing daily over the past week. However, today’s tracking results show support falling for the first time since the speech. Forty-five percent (45%) now favor passage of the Congressional health care reform plan, a figure that’s up just a single point since the speech. Fifty-two percent (52%) are now opposed. Those figures include 23% who Strongly Favor the plan and 41% who are Strongly Opposed.

ABC/WaPo: 54% Approve-43% Disapprove (-6% Net Change)

Today ABC News and the Washington Post released a poll showing President Barack Obama’s approval rating at 54% approve/40% disapprove. This is a net change of -6% from their last poll. The Post’s story is here and the full results are here. Here are some of the findings regarding the President’s health care proposal:

As Congress begins its second week back from August recess, the playing field is virtually level: Americans remain almost deadlocked in their opinion of the Democrats’ health-care initiative, with 46 percent in favor of the proposed changes and 48 percent opposed. There is also a clean split on Obama’s handling of the issue, with 48 percent approving and the same number disapproving. But since mid-August, the percentage “strongly” behind the president on health care has risen to 32 percent, evening out the intensity gap that has plagued him on the subject.

The public also divides about evenly — 51 percent in favor, 47 percent against — on the question of whether people should be required to have health insurance, a central element of the plans under consideration.

But it is the public option that has become the major point of contention, with support for the government creation of an insurance plan that would compete with private insurers stabilizing in the survey after dipping last month. Now, 55 percent say they like the idea, but the notion continues to attract intense objection: If that single provision were removed, opposition to the overall package drops by six percentage points, according to the poll.

Without the public option, 50 percent back the rest of the proposed changes; a still sizable 42 percent are opposed. Independents divide 45-45 on a package without the government-sponsored insurance option, while they are largely negative on the entire set of proposals (40 percent support and 52 percent oppose). Republican opposition also fades 20 points under this scenario.

CNN Finds Bigs Gains for ObamaCare, But With Skewed Sample

Today CNN/Opinion Research released a poll showing big gains for President Barack Obama’s health care proposal after his address to Congress last night. According to the poll, 56% of respondents reacted very positively to the speech and 21% reacted somewhat positively. After the speech, 67% of respondents support President Obama’s plan and 29% oppose it. By comparison, in the days leading up to the speech 53% supported the President’s plan and 36% opposed it.

However, these results must be taken with a grain of salt. The poll’s sample consisted of 18% Republicans, 45% Democrats, and 37% Independents. No recent survey by any credible source has found a greater than 2 to 1 advantage in party identification for Democrats. This makes the poll’s results highly suspect.

UPDATE: CNN is now admitting that “the number of Democrats in the voting age population as a whole indicates that the sample is about 8-10 points more Democratic than the population as a whole.”

AP-Gfk: 50% Approve-49% Disapprove (-12% Net Change)

The Associated Press-Gfk poll released September 9, 2009 shows President Barack Obama with a total approval rating of 50% and a total disapproval rating of 49%. This is a net change of -12% from their last poll (55% approve-42% disapprove) conducted July 16-20, 2009.

On healthcare, 42% approve of the way the President is handling the issue and 52% disapprove. This is a net change of -17% from their July poll (50% approve-43% disapprove).

NBC/WSJ: Plurality Opposes Public Option

From NBC here. Key findings:

[A]ccording to a brand-new NBC News poll, 47% of Americans — a plurality — oppose the public plan, versus 43% who support it. That’s a shift from last month’s NBC/WSJ poll, when 46% said they backed it and 44% were opposed.

In a follow-up question explaining the benefits and disadvantages associated with a public plan, 45% said they agreed with the description — by supporters — that it would help lower health-care costs and provide coverage for uninsured Americans.

But 48% sided with opponents who say a public option would reduce access to their choice of doctors, and would lower costs by limiting medical treatment options.

UPDATE: The WSJ piece about the poll is here.

The Daily Kos has a liberal-leaning analysis of the poll here, and HotAir.com has a conservative-leaning analysis here.
